Volunteer opportunity: Snug Cove Sewer Local Management Committee

The Snug Cove Sewer Local Management Committee (SCSLMC) is seeking a new volunteer member.

The SCLSMC is a management committee that reviews the operating and capital budgets for the utility.

In summer 2017, Bowen Island Municipality was advised that BC Timber Sales (BCTS) intends to pursue industrial-scale logging of five areas of the Crown lands of Bowen Island.

Decision reached in Appeal of Cape Roger Curtis docks case

We were disappointed to learn on July 17, 2017 that the BC Court of Appeal upheld the appeal of Zongshen (Canada) Environtech Ltd. v. Bowen Island Municipality (2017 BCCA 267) and has instructed Bowen Island Municipality to issue a building permit for the docking structure at Cape Roger Curtis lot 14 subject to minor conditions. Marine oil spill field testing to take place July 17-21

Bowen Island Municipality has received notice from Western Canada Marine Response (WCMRC) that they will be conducting field work in Howe Sound the week of July 17 to July 21. As part of the field work, two vessels and boom will be used to test shoreline protection strategies. The work will be focused on Gambier Island and Bowen Island (see map below). Crews may access the shoreline to attach the protection boom.

Cove Bay Water Treatment Plant Pilot Project to begin this summer

When you’re passing by Grafton Lake this summer, you may notice a new structure sitting by the dam just off the side of the road. This container, expected to be fully installed mid-July, will house a mini water purification system that will serve as a pilot project to establish whether a proposed water treatment technology – ceramic ultra-filtration membrane process – will effectively treat Cove Bay water.

Multi-year core funding available for community organizations in 2018

Bowen Island Municipality recognizes that community non-profit organizations contribute to the wellbeing of the citizens of Bowen Island. Some organizations deliver a service that typically would be provided or supported by the municipality in other jurisdictions. These organizations may apply for a Community Organization Core Funding Service Agreement to deliver a community service. The application will be taken into consideration for the 2018 budget.

The deadline to submit an application is July 31, 2017.
