Municipal Water Systems

Water Supply and Distribution

Approximately half of Bowen Island homes are served from a Municipal water system, with the remainder supplied by private communal water systems or utility, shared or individual wells. Community systems are administered privately, and all systems are subject to the Drinking Water Protection Act, Water Act, Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines and other Ministry of Health requirements. For health issues inquiries, contact the Ministry of Health through the Vancouver Coastal Health Unit. The local Health Officer is Rod Schluter.

Bowen Island Municipality owns and operates seven water systems around the island, serving approximately 1,000 connections. These include the following water systems:

Water System Project Priority List

In February 2007 Council adopted a plan, prioritizing utility (water and sewer system) capital projects. The plan is based on an adopted hierarchy of priorities, against which the various identified projects are compared, in order to assess urgency and importance. The assessment also reviewed budgets and sources of funding for the various projects.

This has resulted in the adopted sequence in which utility projects are being undertaken. The report, provided by the Public Works Superintendent, is located here:
