My family (Darcie, Buzz, and I) moved here in 2005 so Buzz could attend IPS. I fell in love with a community of diversity, achievement, and heart; with the green, the quiet, and the dark – Bowen Island.
Shortly after arriving, I joined the Chamber of Commerce. As president, working with Tourism Bowen we increased visitors to Bowen by 85% over 4 years – an important source of income for our small businesses.
This began a commitment to advancing economic sustainability on Bowen. Like organizations, communities succeed or fail together. And without a secure economic foundation, it’s difficult to make progress on other fronts.
I bring a solid record of leading and working with groups to make things happen. I built a successful, award-winning interior design and project management firm; developed Canada’s first online shopping centre; and united two interior design associations under one organization.
I worked with municipal committees and non-profit organizations: the Snug Cove Master Plan and Sustainability Framework Working Groups, Advisory Design Panel, Bowen Community Housing Association, and the committee that brought the First Credit Union to Bowen.
I believe in the power of effective communication. I am a published author of six children’s books (several used in schools). And I published BITE, a community newspaper employing diligent research and interviews to bring relevant information and issues to light.
We need to work together towards creative, collaborative, community solutions – housing diversity, economic development, a community centre, ferry marshaling.
Family. Community. Common ground. Commitment. There is a way. It’s time.
