Silvaine Zimmermann, 56, has raised her family and been active in our community since her arrival in 1989. She is a member of the local Neighborhood Emergency Response team and past member of the National Park Community Advisory Committee. She was a director of the Bowen Island Film Society for several years, a Co-chair of the Waste and Water committee during the previous OCP review, participated on the Crown lands Committee, and has volunteered in schools, food co-ops and in re-organizing BIRD. She has owned an organic vegetarian B&B and co-manages a massage therapy practice.
As Bylaw Services officer and Wharfinger (2008-2011) Silvaine gained valuable insights into the consequences of applying our policies and bylaws. She would like to offer her perspective to help council try and ensure that in future legislative endeavors, the laws we enact serve to increase both harmony and security, ease the frustrations experienced by commuters, and lighten the burdens borne by economically disadvantaged members of our community.
She is a published author and documentary film producer with degrees in Ecology and Oceanography.
With our talent and creativity we can diversify our economy while finding innovative solutions to those problems that beset our island. For example, our Municipality could reduce the amount of waste trucked off island with a community composting silo, which would simultaneously facilitate local food production. Policies enhancing an economy derived from environmentally compatible enterprises would have similar benefits. Silvaine is a firm believer in participatory democracy and always interested in new ideas.
