I first moved to Bowen Island almost 25 years ago, after spending my formative years in the wilds of Northern Ontario. I was looking for a similarly natural environment, after completing university degrees in philosophy & religious studies. It was on Bowen in 1987 that I met my soul mate Lorraine Ashdown. Family circumstances had Lorraine moving back to Winnipeg shortly afterwards, and I followed. But good luck prevailed and we came back to Bowen with our daughter Ali in 2002.
Professionally, I have moved from roles in arts administration to advertising and design, and then into branding. After moving back to Bowen I made a conscious decision to work on island, combining freelance with unrelated local work. I’ve worked locally as a water treatment operator, managing six municipal water systems and several private ones. During this time, I also made a professional shift in my freelance work, moving into film production. While picking up this trade, I saw an island need to document its cultural and political activities. For the past three years I have been filming Council and Public meetings for the community. This experience has given me an understanding of the key issues facing the Municipality and the people of Bowen.
My platform is about building community: putting more humanity into island governance by working to look after the young family, the aged, the commuter and the less fortunate, while always respecting the fragile ecosystem we inhabit -- and fostering Bowen’s cultural and artistic growth.
