Council expresses support for housing initiative

August 3, 2017

In the 2017 Island Plan, Council committed to support diverse housing initiatives, with the goal of making Bowen Island a welcoming, long-term home for people of varying income levels, lifestyles and age groups. One of the initiatives currently underway is a proposed building that would contain a health care facility and rental housing at 980 Dorman Road. The proposal would require rezoning the property via bylaw.

Council remains strongly committed to a rental building and health centre, as initially proposed. The following resolution was adopted unanimously by Council at its July 24, 2017 meeting:

“That Council direct staff to advise DK Harris Properties:

  1. That the 90k contribution to Health Centre Foundation from the Community Grants fund as requested by DK Harris is not feasible;
  2. That Council would be pleased to consider a grant application directly from the Health Centre Foundation for support of its proposed facility; and
  3. That Council support the project of 980 Dorman Road as rental apartments and a health centre facility.”

The resolution has been forwarded to the applicant, D.K. Harris Properties. Further public process will include a public hearing and third reading of the bylaw, if the Municipality can proceed with the rezoning as currently drafted. If the applicant wishes to amend the rezoning application as recently indicated, the current bylaw in process would have to be rescinded and a new application submitted.
