Candidate - Bob Turner

Contact Information:

Bob Turner has been the Mayor of Bowen Island since 2005. I moved to the island with my wife Rosemary in 1989 and have a long history of commitment to this community. I was elected Councilor on Bowen Island Municipality’s first Council (1999-2002) where my focus was land-use planning, protection of water resources, and acquisition of parklands. From 2002-2005, I was a member of the Sustainable Community Advisory Committee, where I led the Bowen Island Waterscape Poster and Booklet project on the water resources of Bowen Island. In the early 1990’s, I participated in the Official Community Plan Review as a member of the Environment Committee, was elected to the Advisory Planning Commission (1990-1992), and was author of Nature Matters column for Undercurrent (1991-1995).  I also organized the 1991 Howe Sound Environmental Science Workshop on Bowen Island that brought together over 40 scientists to assess the state of the environment of Howe Sound.

I am also a research scientist with Geological Survey of Canada. Since becoming mayor, I have reduced this role to a part-time position. My work promotes wise use of the land through education about water and earth resources, natural hazards, and climate change. I have a B.Sc. in Geological Engineering from Queens University, and a M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Geology from Stanford University in California. Part of this work has led to my authoring an award-winning book and information posters on geoscience and the impact of climate change in Vancouver region.
